The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is lending its voice to the campaign for comprehensive immigration reform by urging Congress to pass such reform before it takes its annual August recess. “Our strength as a nation is drawn from our diversity and the unique talents of persons from around the world. Under our current immigration system, we weaken our country, not strengthen it. By not acting, we alienate a generation of young persons, who are the future leaders of our country. We are saying “we do not want you or your families,” Archbishop Thomas Wenski of Miami, who sits on the USCCB’s Committee on Migration, said in a statement Thursday.
Another member of the USCCB, Bishop Eusebio Elizondo, expressed concern about the impact deportations are having upon immigrant communities. “Is this how we invest in these young citizens – the future leaders of our nation? No doubt we are undermining their trust in America when their own U.S. government – whose purpose is to protect these children – takes their father or mother away. There is a large social cost to inaction, a price we pay in this country every day and will pay into the future,” according to Bishop Elizondo.
The USCCB leadership appears to have taken notice of signals from the Obama administration which itself is now urging Congress to move forward in enacting comprehensive immigration reform before the end of the summer. As the administration intends to take unilateral actions without Congress to reduce deportations of undocumented immigrant in the country if Congress does not act, the USCCB seeks to take advantage of what it may view as the final opportunity in the near future to push a legislative solution which can address the consequences of numerous immigrants working and living in the United States without the opportunity to obtain residency, citizenship or even permits for legal employment.
