The New Jersey Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) announced today that Edward Shulman, Esq., of the nationally-recognized immigration firm, The Shulman Law Group, LLC, will be the 2015-2016 Chairperson of the EOIR Committee. EOIR stands for the Executive Office for Immigration Review. Under delegated authority form the Attorney General, the EOIR conducts immigration court hearings, appellate reviews, and administrative hearings. The main goal of the EOIR is to adjudicate immigration cases wherein the nation’s immigration laws are to be interpreted and administered in an objective, fair, and expedient manner.
As Chairperson, Mr. Shulman’s role will be to act as a liaison between the Immigration Court, the Immigration Judges, and the AILA membership, which consists of immigration lawyers throughout the state of New Jersey. In particular, Mr. Shulman’s responsibilities will include: 1) scheduling and creating the content agenda for liaison meetings; 2) exploring EOIR’s positions and policies on a number of different issues that impact immigration attorneys and/or their immigration clients; 3) bringing questions and concerns that immigration attorneys have to the attention of the Immigration Judges; 4) trouble shooting court administrative issues; and 5) ensuring that the AILA membership is abreast of any new changes in local court regulations or procedures, shifts in the docket responsibilities of the Immigration Judges (e.g. if certain judges move from detained to non-detained dockets), and regarding court scheduling matters (e.g. court closings).
