Today, President Biden unveiled an exciting new executive action which seeks to shield undocumented spouses of US citizens from deportation. Noteworthy is the fact that this new executive action could offer protections to approximately 500,000 undocumented spouses from being removed from the United States. The executive action applies to those who have lived in the United States for a decade or more. Individuals will have to pass a background check and will have three years to apply for permanent residency, as of June 17, 2024. Protections also apply to non-citizen children.
Importantly, Biden’s new executive order could help foster familial unity and it also would create an easier path to obtaining work visas for DACA recipients. It also marks a direct pathway to citizenship. Advocates have noted that this will not only impact families with immigrant members but will benefit society by helping American businesses and improving the economy.
At the Shulman Law Group, we applaud the efforts of the Biden administration in setting forth this important action on immigration. Our staff is poised and delighted to provide legal consultations for anyone who may be eligible to adjust their legal immigration status through this new action.
